As a plus-sized girl myself working in beauty and media, I was moved when Amy Keller Laird, the Editor in Chief of Women’s Health, penned goodbye letters to the term “bikini body” and “drop 2 sizes” in her January 2016 issue. Promoting healthy beauty treatments and outlook without “negging” is totally up my alley. That’s why I’m especially proud of this placement.

Holiday Gift Guides for Indie Brands

For large retail brands, holiday kits are planned well in advance. Print editors are typically done with it by the end of August, and digital editors start planning as early as October. It’s not so nuts as you see holiday kits already available at Sephora and Ulta way before Thanksgiving nowadays.

Small indie brands may not have the luxury of a 6-month lead time, or even a 3-month lead time. So what do you in that scenario?

Keep pitching, but don’t get flustered when editors tell you that they’re done with their holiday gift guides. You should expect that assuming you’ve done the homework. But don’t give up! Unless it’s an actual holiday kit, pitch it for a post-holiday story.

Keep your eyes and ears opened for freelancers who work on multiple gift guides for multiple outlets. You never know what spin they’re looking for at the last minute.

Expand your outreach–seek out blogs and Instagram influencers. While we all want an influencer with millions of followers, influencers with 5K to 10K+ followers can wield as much influence to their highly intimate and engaged audience. Make sure what you pitch actually match their aesthetics and price points, just like how you’d pitch to editors.

A New Website and Blog

As I’ve transitioned over the past few years from beauty blogger to beauty publicist, a new site is definitely in order. I believe in giving shout outs to my favorite brands, of course disclosing any ties or relationships. I’ll also use this as a platform for my thoughts on work, balancing life and work, managing stress and anything I find interesting as a 30-something career woman.

Random fun tidbit: I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis. A few years ago I asked a beauty editor if she had any tips on keeping makeup from melting during humid NYC summers. Her advice? Go bare face! It’s the trend!!

It took me while to embrace my skin without makeup, but now I dig it. The key is to use ingredients that work for you and to eat more fruits and veggies. My skin likes salicylic acid as it’s on the oily, acneic side. And since eating more fruits and veggies, I have that lit-from-within glow that no amount of strobing could mimic! Plus it helps that at 30-something I happen to love myself more.
