Asians and Narrow Eyes

March 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

There’s a post on RiceDaddies showing a picture of Kai-Lan, the Chinese counterpart to the popular Dora the Explorer.  Kai-Lan is drawn with big round eyes, and the poster indirectly made a comment about how it’s not realistic, and how it shows that to Asians, the ideal look would be to have big round eyes.

Now… since my picture is posted a lot here, you guys will know that I do have big round eyes.  Not just for an Asian, but in general, my eyes are big and round.  They are a big almond shaped, but overall, when you look at my eyes, you’d see them as big and round.

Yet.. at times when people start criticizing how having the big and round eye on Asians shows how much we idealize Western features, I feel ashamed.  Yes, ashamed.  And I also feel like I’m under attack!  Is it really my fault or my parents fault that my entire family have big round eyes??  No.. we didn’t go under the surgeon’s knife, we were born that way.

So seriously people, stop it with the whole if you think big round eyes on Asians look nice, then you want to look white or some other crap like that.  Some Asians are born with it.  And I shouldn’t feel like I’m being attacked for what I was born with.

Oh yea.. white people, some of you have small eyes too so stop making fun of Asians for having small eyes.  That pisses me off too.

I have rounder eyes too. LoL. But, G, don’t feel so bad. These are the same people that try to say that Asians going blonde are also trying to be white. It’s a load of crap. Stereotypers, trying to spread an asian identity by appearance which is impossible.
