You know how when finals come around, we always find something to help us procrastinate? The first 2 years were spent on Facebook, a place where we could spend 20 hours on it searching up people you held grudges against from elementary school and middle school. You know, the ones who called you stupid or laughed at you because you talked funny, even when they were the ones still in the “ESL” program when you had successfully test out of it years before them. Yes, THOSE PEOPLE.
The first year facebook came out, if they weren’t on it, you could be assured that they weren’t in a top institution. Facebook used to be only opened to schools like Harvard, Stanford, Cal, and of course, UCLA. If they weren’t on it, then you’d know they didn’t get to a place better than you. By the second year, they added more schools and you could see exactly where the kid that laughed at your (severe) overbite ended up at, and what they were majoring in. It was such a confidence booster! You see the school, run through Newsweek’s top 50 universities quickly in your head, decide that you are still smarter because you are at UCLA and they aren’t, and laugh at the pathetic major they’ve chosen (psh.. history? you gotta be fucking kidding me.. that’s so weak sauce!).
By the third year that got boring.. so what do you do? Where do you turn to?
D R A M A.. .specifically.. ASIAN DRAMA. The sappy and somewhat predictable writing has got you hooked, and you end up spending 2 whole days watching the whole series. Even though you already knew that so and so is going to die, and so and so will be hit by a car, and so and so will receive an organ from the person who died (screw MHC compatibility! screw graft rejection!) by the end of the first episode, you still devote 2 entire days to watching the series, taking breaks only to eat, pee, poo, and sleep.
Of course you switched up the dramas with animes once in a while, but overall it’s the same thing. This gets you pissed as hell because by 4th year, if you don’t pass one of your upper div classes, you won’t be able to graduate on time. And with certain required classes offered only once a year, that pressure to graduate is suffocating you worse than the scent of a bum with curry smelling shit and year-old urine covered all over him.
Finally.. you’ve reached the last quarter here.. just a few more days til you walk… you’ve sworn off dramas until after you graduate so there’s no new dramas to hook you in. You spend as much time away from the TV as possible so you won’t be distracted by So You Think You Can Last, 1 vs 100, Jeopardy, and whatever show they have on right now (good thing Heroes is OVER). You try to focus all of your attention on your last finals.. but what happens?
You discover new blogs.
MetroDad to be exact. This man’s writings will make you laugh uncontrollably (T.A.E.!), smile, giggle, and cry. MetroDad’s chronicles of his new found fatherhood will touch your heart. It doesn’t hurt that he’s an exceptional writer, but damn.. it’s fucking addicting! The adventures him and his wife BossLady has with their 2.5 year old daughter, Peanut, is just so fun and amazing.
And you know what else? It makes me realize there’s so much more to my life after college. I’m only 21.. what’s the rush?
